Good stuff: Reception and Bar staff

Bad stuff: Breakfast

Overall: It is stated that the Hotel is on the Park & Ride bus route but does not mention that this service terminates in the early evening. The wait for breakfast would indicate that it was freshly prpared but it was still cool on arrival and although I like my bacon very lightly cooked (which was not requested) the rashers served were, if anything, under cooked even for my tastes. The breakfast staff were not very attentive and had to be asked several times before things like more toast or coffee were received (this did improve on the second morning but was still not to a very high standard). By contrast the reception staff on both arrival and departure were welcoming, helpful and friendly. I was also impressed by the Hotel Bar because of both its good selection of malt whiskies and the Bar Manager who, as well as being a good host, also has a good knowedge of his stock. I would also have preferred it if the bar had stayed open another hour until 12:00 but that is a very minor point.

Good stuff: On bus route into York, parking facility, friendly staff

Bad stuff: Low ceiling in attic bedroom very dangerous, Bathroom too small, having to remove towel rail before entering shower very inconvenient. Mattress on bed extremely hard. Light over sink not working. No mention of annex accommodation in Sunderland House made in hotel information and photo of hotel does not inclulde dormer windows in attic accommodation.

Overall: Perhaps if we had had a better room with not so many stairs to climb or we had been 50 years younger we would have had a different impression, but I find it extremely difficult to understand how the room we stayed in warranted 4 stars.
