While you stay with us why not visit the city. Filled with theatres, museums, heritage sights and some marvellous shopping. The main shopping arena is pedestrianised and easy to get around. The Shambles is one of the most popular streets - old world charm preserved in medieval style. York Royal Theatre and Grand Opera House are favourite with theatre goers. Be sure to visit the Castle Museum and perhaps do a city wall tour by foot. Take a river boat up the Ouse to view the city in a different perspective and if you fancy it you can go on a Ghost Hunting trip or visit the Psychic Museum on Stonegate.

Bad stuff: The breakfast was very, very slow service. No one there when we arrived for breakfast, slow taking our order and the tea/coffee very slow to appear. There was only 1 jug of milk for all the guests so you had to keep getting up to get the milk if and when you got a drink.

Overall: There had been a late booking of a wedding reception so our room was changed to a twin and we were placed directly above the function room so we had a disco until 12am!! We were asked if this was OK but what else were we to do at 6pm on a Saturday bank holiday weekend. We had rung up in the pm to check all was ok so if we had been told then we could have looked elsewhere.

Good stuff: Friendliness and helpfulness of staff: excellent approach to customer service. Lovely 'family' atmosphere. Only a few minutes drive away from the Park and Ride into the city.

Bad stuff: Nothing really. There were no telephones in the 4 rooms that I booked but that was not any problem to us as it was a leisure visit. Business people however may find that an inconvenience. (A public phone was available in the upstairs lounge area.)

Overall: The rooms were clean and perfectly adequate for a short stay. The staff were truly excellent (a family run hotel) and they made it a hotel that I would certainly revisit. The standard of food served for the evening dinner was excellent and very good value. The lounge/bar area was pleasant and comfortable for relaxing in prior to evening dinner. You felt welcomed as a real guest and not just as someone booked into a room there.

Good stuff: It was a good size room but the W/C, Shower area was very compact!

Bad stuff: Overall very reasonable, clean and well staffed. If I had a choice I would have had fish (kipper) for breakfast.

Overall: When I received confirmation it would have been helpful to have had more travel information (small map of area). I had to phone for last minute instructions past Wilberfoss.

Good stuff: Hotel was very cosy and comfortable. Breakfast was very good.

Bad stuff: Breakfast could be served at a later time during the week. Could do with a light over the entrance in the evening.

Overall: The Hotel was in a good location for visiting York and the surrounding areas. The park and ride system is good and fairly close by and good value for money. Restaurant was excellent for evening meal with very good service.

Bad stuff: A bit more concern would have been appreciated - the over sink light did not work either, but did not bother to mention this after shower recation - see below.

Overall: Room was re allocated on arrival as staff said - if we had this room - it would make it easier for them next day. We should have been told about the shower problem when being given this room. Shower was cold - Sat am no matter how long we ran it or turned knob - 2 of us did try - when drawn to staff attention at check out - informed that it was a problem with that room and the one next door - said we should have come down and let them know - they apparantly can make it work !!! Only one problem - I wanted a shower at 7.30 - reception did not open/no one around until 8.30am. Would have liked option of earlier breakfaat - in week 7.30 start. Very noisy - ? some kind of cooler outside the window. I would have hoped that our comfort and the fact that we were paying guests would have counted for more than convenience for the staff.

Overall: We felt that the hotel was good value for money when just passing through. As we are older the bed against the wall was a little inconvenient. Staff were friendly, helpful & remembered why we were there asking how the occasion had gone on our return.

Good stuff: Full English breakfast available instead of the Continental offered by most places

Overall: Very helpful and friendly staff, we didn't find anything really negative about this hotel...maybe just that the decoration needed updating, but that was all. Our room was very clean.

Good stuff: The welcome was good and staff were friendly and helpful. The food was of a very good quality and was value for money. Portion sizes were very adequate.

Bad stuff: Would prefer the option of a vegetable selection instead of salad garnish and peas.

Overall: The hotel is quite remote from a village. I.e. not within comfortable walking distance, and therefore seems a little isolated. However the staff were very pleasant, the food good and overall I would be happy to return to the Hotel in the future. They specialise in steaks and the quality of the cooked product was excellent.

Good stuff: it was a very pleasant place to stay with friendly staff and owners,and it was convenienly situated.

Overall: This was a very nice hotel/pub and we were made very welcome,i would certainly use it again if i were to visit the area again.The food in the restaurant was excellent quality, probably the best steak i have tasted and was truly good value for money.

Overall: better directions. The hotel had one group who played noisy games until 4.00 in the morning which kept us awake.

Overall: Place was pleasant and good value. Only gripe is that our shower failed to work the following morning. I gave up on it as short of time and reported it when we checked out, to be told that it does work but takes a while to deliver the hot water sometimes. Obviously a quirk of the water system. In itself not a big problem had we been told about it in advance. I don't think guests should have to work it out for themselves - I admit I am a bit impatient but when staying in a hotel/B&B I think you would expect these things to work efficiently.

Good stuff: Good value for money (£50 per dbl room), 10 minutes from york town centre, easy to find.

Bad stuff: Unfriendly atmosphere created by landlady laying the law down upon arrival, comments on checkout etc.

Overall: The hotel is situated on the A1079 in the direction of Hull, it leads directly into York and probably takes 10-15 mins in a taxi dependant on the traffic. Good value for money (breakfast included)Quiet at night time, ideal for a short stay whilst sightseeing/shopping in York.
