Literally just outside the walls of York, the Monkbar Hotel is in a splendid location for your stay on your visit. Our team of professionally trained staff are all to eager to help and serve you. A warm and welcoming atmosphere await you at this Best Western hotel in York.

The hotel is named after the bar or city gate that is just opposite us, Monkgate bar. We are within easy walking distance to the Minster and many of York's other attractions. As you wander through the gate into the city why not visit one of the many York pubs to get a feel of what local life is all about.

Our restaurant is good value for money and a great British institution all rolled into one experience. A good choice of meals to suit most tastes and everyones pocket book are available.

Good stuff: good location

Bad stuff: The walls were really thin so that everything happening in the next room and in the hall could be heard. The carpet was disgusting, ripped, and tattered around the edges. It felt like I was in a one star rather than a three and the fee was as much as a four star hotel. I booked online for 79£ a night and found out the day that I checked out that it was 85£ and 110£, however, my printout that I handed to the lady at the front desk when I checked in stated the booked rate. I was very angry and received no help whatesoever. I really felt that I was taken advantage of. This was my second time staying in a Best Western (both times were not good experiences) and this will probably be the last. I will inform all my friends and acquaintences of the poor quality of the hotel.

Overall: York was great. The hotel was awful!

Overall: the room was clean and well equipped, the staff were very friendly and polite and the breakfast was first class.

Good stuff: Room and bathroom both spacious and clean. Linen and towelling good.Location good for city centre.

Bad stuff: Reception staff were always answering the phone so check-in and check-out were both delayed.I find this really irritating especially if I am in a hurry.It is a serious let-down. The staff themselves were courteous and were sensitive to my impatience.

Overall: Fairly good overall, food average.

Overall: UNFORTUNATLY BOTH OUR NIGHTS CLASHED WITH PRIVATE FUNCTIONS,WHICH MENT THE LOUNGE AREA WAS VERY BUSY FROM THE OVERSPILL OF THE PARTIES.ALSO A BAR-B-QUE WAS SITED DIRECTLY BELOW OUR ROOM WINDOW,WHICH WAS A BIT OVERPOWERING

Good stuff: The room was large and the bed comfortable

Bad stuff: The standard of the bathroom needs improving. The noise coming from the road outside my bedroom window couldn't be lessoned even by closing the windows - I was woken twice with the sound of an emergency siren going past.

Overall: I choice the Monkbar due to its proximity to York city centre. It was easy to find and most importantly had a free car park on site. Breakfast was buffet style and the food served was excellent. I will return to this hotel but ask for a room to the rear to avoid trafic noise.

Overall: I think it was expensive for what it was and I do think if I had had longer to shop around I would have found something of equal quality but less expensive.

Overall: Generally I felt the room was cold albeit appreciate there was a change in temperature at the weekend but did not need to put in any cold water when running a bath.My main gripe was being woken at 0645 on Sunday morning from the noise ie voices and radio coming from below ?kitchen

Good stuff: Easy to find, good parking, all staff very helpful, food lovely and good value

Bad stuff: Noisy one evening due to party, but quiet by midnight. Fire alarm one night was false alarm

Overall: We needed a hotel within walking distance of the town with adequate parking and reasonable standards. The Monkbar hotel surpassed our requirements. It was more expensive than some other hotels in York, which were fully booked, but I think we got good value for money.
