Guests Name: John  was travelling as Mature couple

Good stuff: Size of the room.

Bad stuff: During our stay the cold water was off for several hours and the staff failed to make this known to us. As a result we had to attend a wedding without getting a shower. Your staff should be more proactive when utilities fail.

Overall: I would like to have known that the hotel was undergoing a renovation when I booked. I suggest you close the hotel until the work is completed in order that you do not disappoint the majority of your guests.

Good stuff: Excellent location. Beautiful surroundings, the public rooms are wonderful if faded splendour! Staff are polite, considerate and helpful. Lovely breakfast in quiet and beautifully presented dining room. Rooms are spotless and facilites very good. Non-smoking - brilliant!

Bad stuff: They are soon to undergo refurbishment which is obviously needed as there are areas which need some upgrading however I hope they don't lose any of the period charm, please no garish modern decoration!

Overall: The atmosphere of the hotel is relaxing but efficient. Well done we will stay there again. There is a timeless quality about the whole place which meeds to be preserved; perhaps restoration rather than refurbishment is in order. The only thing I needed was perhaps better directions on how to get there as the one way system in Harrogate is confusing.

Good stuff: Grand period features of hotel

Bad stuff: Rotting windows, very outdated bathrooms

Overall: Nice, large period hotel. Good to see the period features in the main areas kept well. Bathrooms disappointing, old fashioned but clean and tidy. Windows had flaking paint and looked very tired. Hotel was about to have multi million pound refit June 2005. Would go back afterwards as enjoyed the stay. Staff excellent.

Good stuff: Spacious room & good servive from staff

Bad stuff: Shoddy finishings and dirty curtains poor soundproofing

Overall: The overall appearance of the hotel was shoddy and in places dirty, however the service was excellent and the food good, the rooms spacious although the lighting was poor and we would not have expected such hard beds in a 4 star hotel, soundproofing in the rooms could be improved

Good stuff: Plenty of space in common areas and room

Bad stuff: Facilities were somewhat antiquated, for example bathroom . Similarly the heating system was difficult to control. Despite being mid winter had to leave window open all night as heating was constant due to the nature of the antiquated installation.

Overall: The hotel was reasonable value at the price paid but would have been totally unreasonable at it's standard rates.

Good stuff: The location was very good.

Overall: The hotel was unable to offer us a room with a view, as requested on the booking, which was rather disappointing. The hotel is in need of a lick of paint and some air fresheners - the corridors with the smoking rooms were very smelly. The room was adequate but the noise from the room above (& a persistent pigeon) kept us awake both nights. For the money paid, I thought that the service could have been just that little bit more friendly and the bedroome, just that little bit more appelaing.
