Under new management in 2008, Hotel 53 (formally the Quality hotel) is one of the newest and largest in the city. Modern design with up to date amenities at a good price. Literally just inside York's walls, there is only a short walk to any of the attractions in York..

We are easy to find in the city centre. We are at the top of one of the main shopping streets of York, Piccadilly.

Our contemporary style is something many of our guests comment upon. Chique and clean with no clutter around you. What this means for you is more space to relax in.

We have lift access to all of our 6 floors. Perfect for those who don't like stairs.

Our large walk in showers are the perfect start to the day. Once you are ready, off you can go to visit the roman and medieval wonders that await.

Good stuff: Hotel 53 personal were very accomodating, from getting my request for a cake in our room upon arrival, to getting us in our room earlier that the regular time and other small requests we had during the week. The room was clean and comfortable. Loved having the tea and cookies available in the room. We loved the design of the walk in shower! The beds were wonderful(at least the king bed was!). Nice to have the internet in the room, also.

Bad stuff: We discovered that you had to turn the heat way up to get the room warm. Showers were hit and miss with the hot water. Late night was ususally a good time to get a hot shower, or real early in the am. We noticed the first day we were there that the hotel was very buisy, and that contributed to the low hot water available I am sure. Windows were drafty and let in the street noise easily. You could hear people walking and talking at night, traffic, and in the early morning when trucks were delivering etc.. Not alot of room to unpack and put your clothes, we lived out of our suitcases, literally.

Overall: We enjoyed our stay very much. We like the clean,uncluttered feel of the room. We weren't in the room much during the day, and in the evening it was "cozy" because there wasn't alot of extra room with the sofa bed pulled out. For us that was ok.The staff were all very pleasant and willing to do whatever they could to help make our stay what we had hoped. Thank You Hotel 53!

Good stuff: Fabulous bathroom !! Very impressive reception and common parts .. We loved the contemporary and "quality" feel of the whole hotel.

Bad stuff: The room was advertised as being large enough to accommodate 2 adults and 2 children but this was not true in our case. Our room was much SMALLER than we had expected, there was no sofa bed and there was not enough floor space for 2 children to sleep.

Good stuff: One of your receptionists was helpful and pleasant.

Bad stuff: Unfriendly approach at check-in. Lift not working. Walls were so thin that you could hear everything in adjacent room. Bar area was fully of noisy drunks at 7pm, and not much better at 10.30. Luggage storage facility was insecure. Toiletries and towels of poor standard for a hotel with boutique pretensions.

Overall: Great pretensions to quality displayed on the web site. Totally failed to deliver in reality. Premier Inn / Travel Lodge quality at three times their prices. A major disappointment.

Good stuff: Extremely helpful staff. A good clean room, comfortable and warm. An excellent breakfast too!

Overall: Wouldn't hesitate to reccommend this hotel to anyone staying in York.

Good stuff: Staff were friendly and courteous. Meal and breakfast were very good,also handy for the town

Bad stuff: dirty and stained carpet in room ,not very welcoming,plus other good hotels generally provide slippers

Overall: good time ,good hotel,good staff,but the room was a bit of a let down ,especially at the price charged .

Good stuff: Loved the huge bed! Decor, especially bathroom great - very modern and minimalist. Excellent service and choices of breakfast.

Bad stuff: Hotel was very hot, generally. Lots of noise outside out window from Witherspoons opposite, and the ring road traffic.

Overall: Would recommend.

Overall: London Prices, no breakfast included?? Having recently stayed in a London hotel of the same quality the extra £10 in cost got me an evening meal and breakfast inlcuded.

Good stuff: very comfortable.....room contained everything needed for short stay, except (see below)

Bad stuff: (1)shower only..no option to take a bath (2)insufficicient storage space for smaller items of clothing and luggage

Overall: I would have liked to have known whether there was car parking available, and if not the nearest and cheapest options. Also there did not seem to be any indication of the distance of the hotel from the city centre amenities.

Good stuff: modern and minimalistic

Bad stuff: the room was small, cramped and not made suitable for a young child, hed to pay for tv and parking was 20.00 just to park the car i couldnt beleive it

Overall: i would like the priice to come down as although it is modern it was small, facilities wernt good, beds uncomfortable and generally poor for the money, room was far too warm but we couldnt open the window as it was far too noisy and so was the fan the hotel eventually supplied.

Good stuff: Central location,clean, pleasant but v.business like.

Bad stuff: Do not recommend putting a family next door to a 'couple', as sound proofing through interconnecting door was poor(in fact zero!).The children were exhausted from site seeing and fell fast asleep..However we didn't and got to the stage of putting our own telly on to disguise the more than obvious noises from our loving neighbours.I would have felt we needed to change rooms had it not been a one night stay.

Overall: Good central location, ideal for sight seeing... Modern business like interior...not necessarily designed with children in mind. Clean accomodation,most needs met, whilst there are modern/upto date soft furnishings..some issues like shower drainage clearly need some updating. I would recommend this hotel for couples/business trips stop overs rather than families.Especially where you feel you need to take your children out, later perhaps than you would because the rooms cannot accomodate any 'play' time, before bed.(also not a bath to wind down tired children).
