The Bay Horse Marygate York - Reviews

We have had recent contact from the pub management. Their response to the claims people were not allowed to use the toilets without buying a drink here were, what I would call, reasonable. They told us, "We are a pub. People coming in to use the toilets is part of gamble you take being a pub close to the river in York. We would of course prefer people to purchase a drink before or after they use the facilities.

Four star rating imageRoger Macdonald says: I have just taken four of my grandchildren plus assorted adults to Sunday lunch at the Bay Horse. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the everybody enjoyed their meal.

Four star rating imageSusan Kearney says: This is a superb venue. The food is to die for and it is complimented by a great wine list and a well stocked bar. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the Chef is a star, especially as one of our party has some specific dietary requirements. Well done!

Five star rating imageMaureen and Bob Wheawall tell us: After trying a few of the excellent real ales at lunch time on Thursday, we decided to have dinner at the bay horse. The food was of the best quality, and the quiz we took part in afterwards was fun. Andy and Barbara made us very welcome, and the condition/choice of real ales was top notch, a real credit. When visiting York again, we shall definitely be spending some time in this very friendly pub and would recommend it to all our acquaintances. Next year they are holding another beer festival and we would hate to miss it. Cheers x

Five star rating imageDawn Brown tells us: I went to the Bay Horse this weekend, while visiting York. I was very impressed by the standard of hospitality, by the staff and the landlord Andy and his partner Babs. The friendly atmosphere and good food (onion rings are to die for ) make it a must for any body who likes the old pubs with a modern welcome. Very enjoyable. Very nice.

Andy sent a review saying: After 4 1/2 years it was fantastic to enter a pub that I have passed by, watching it fall to pieces while closed. When I went in, I had half of each of the six cask ales on offer. I even got to talk with the manager who seems a nice guy as well. I had lunch which I found very nice and everything was reasonably priced. Good luck to everyone involved, don't think you will need it though.

Kevin Ireson's review: This is the larger of the two pubs on Marygate. The Tudoresk upper floor makes it stand out. You cannot miss the black beams and whitewash outside. It is easily spotted as you drive down to the Marygate car park. For the size of the building it is a surprisingly cozy pub inside. It gets very busy during hot summer days as people who walk down the river often will call in for a pint and a bite to eat here.

I have not been in for years. In its hay day, it was the venue for after production parties of the York Festival of Mystery Plays. The large upper room is a great place for a private function. It did get closed down in 2008 and is now re-opened in 2009. I will get some more details for you when I check it out, soon.
