The Bay Horse Marygate York - Reviews
Thank you for your message Stacie. I (webmaster Kevin) know what you mean about people coming is to use facilities and not ordering. As a bar-man it used to drive me up the wall. Especially when they don't even bother to ask. Grrrr... Now with the below, the word vendetta, which is ironic considering the reviews content. Also it would seem they did not actually buy a drink, although they did say they made an attempt. So ...
The first (and last) time I will ever experience this pub was several weeks ago. Having just been to Clifton Moor cinema we'd driven in to York to drop a friend off at the train station, before spotting the pub after several wrong turns and then deciding to go for a quick drink. My friend went in first as she was dying to use the toilet, and the rest of us (my partner, a mutual friend and myself) followed directly behind. However on entering the pub, as my friend went towards the toilets the blonde, middle-aged barmaid, I never got her name, started yelling at her, rudely and in no uncertain terms that toilets were for customer use only. She tried numerous times to assure her that she would be buying a drink afterwards, as did the rest of us who had approached the bar with that intent but to no avail. Furthermore! We are not a confrontational group and were only after a small drink before the long drive home, so turned to quietly leave and find somewhere else, however the lady then decided to yell after us: "Stay out you ******** ***** ****!" This is not the type of thing I expect from any institution which I pay to use, and not only will I not be returning but I'll make damn sure no one I know does.
Andy sent a review saying: After 4 1/2 years it was fantastic to enter a pub that I have passed by, watching it fall to pieces while closed. When I went in, I had half of each of the six cask ales on offer. I even got to talk with the manager who seems a nice guy as well. I had lunch which I found very nice and everything was reasonably priced. Good luck to everyone involved, don't think you will need it though. Kevin Ireson's review: This is the larger of the two pubs on Marygate. The Tudoresk upper floor makes it stand out. You cannot miss the black beams and whitewash outside. It is easily spotted as you drive down to the Marygate car park. For the size of the building it is a surprisingly cosy pub inside. It gets very busy during hot summer days as people who walk down the river often will call in for a pint and a bite to eat here. I have not been in for years. In its hayday, it was the venue for after production parties of the York Festival of Mystery Plays. The large upper room is a great place for a private function. It did get closed down in 2008 and is now re-opened in 2009. I will get some more details for you when I check it out, soon. |
