Oscars Wine Bar York - Reviews

Three star rating image Kevin Ireson says;

Oscars Wine Bar is a nice place to enjoy a meal and a drink with a few friends.

The price for a meal and a drink here is quite good value for money. There is a varied menu available, all of which is quickly prepared and served to your table. There is a good selection of wines available by the bottle and by the glass. Also beers, cider, and non-alcoholic drinks are available.

My friend and I thought we should make a change to our usual arrangements for going out on an evening. So, when he called up and asked if I fancied going to Oscar's "at their new place", I said yes. We walked in and went strait to our table, just like we used to in the old wine bar. It took a while for us to get served.

The waitress told us, "You should wait to be seated at the front when you come in." This was new to us and we did not see any sign of someone to greet us at the door, but she was pleasant enough with it. She then took our order happily.

Our food arrived quite quickly and was very nice. My nicely cooked chicken was moist and tender. My friend enjoyed his burger very much. He said, "That was really good. If you fancy coming again some time I would be up for it."

When I asked the manageress to sum up the concept of Oscars, she replied, "We just want people to be happy and enjoy themselves here."

Oscar's move to The Swinegate area puts it in the heart of the old city. The atmosphere, food and service here I could likened to a Bistro or Trattoria. That being, not as posh as a restaurant but, far better than a Cafe. It is good value for money, you get what you pay for.

One star rating image Paul says: Recently returned to Oscar's after a year or two and sadly I can no longer say one good thing about it! I may as well just list the bad points:

  • Ignored when we came in (waitress clocked us and ignored us);
  • Had to wait 20mins to be seated, other people were prioritised over us;
  • Food selection is very poor (if you don't want a burger);
  • Staff are NOT friendly;
  • Food quality is poor;
  • Music is DEAFENING! (we were shouting);
  • When we asked for the music to be turned down we were ignored (but told they would do it - yeah, right);
  • Food is expensive;
  • When we complained our comments were ignored (we had to shout them to be heard!) and met with abuse;

I would never return here. There are so many lovely restaurants in York, don't waste your time with this one!

Four star rating image Matt sent us his thoughts: Just made my annual visit to York to find Oscars has moved! To be precise it has moved round the corner. The good news is that the food seems as good in value and quality as ever. It took three visits during my stay to decide I actually prefer the new site. I spoke to some of the staff and they said they preferred the new site as they didn't have to run up and down stairs.

Four star rating image Wendy Bromwich emailed in to tell us: I work in London and live just outside York. I was delighted to bring (to what has to be the best in Yorkshire) my work associates, they simply could not believe the great food and service and surroundings for the money. We have visited you often in the past five months,and passed your name on. I can only say you have improved year by year.

Four star rating image Lynne and Norman Jamieson say: Just been down to York for a few days and found, by chance, Oscar's Wine Bar and Bistro. We went twice and both times it was exceptional. The food was excellent, and the house wine beautiful. We sat inside, but outside was just lovely. Finding Oscar's made our holiday, we couldn't recommend it enough.

Three star rating image Natalie Rooney'a review: Oscar's, is near Stonegate in York. The quality of the food here is always good and is a firm favourite with both tourists and residents. The style of the interior creates a warm and modern atmosphere. The menu is varied and offers both traditional and worldwide cuisine. The size of the portions and quality of food offers good value for money.

Oscar's is a great place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon or to act as a meeting place for friends before a night out around the city bars. It is also very friendly to families. Overall a great place to visit and highly recommended.

Sam email us to say: Oscars is a great place to eat and drink. The food is great and the staff are friendly. It is a great starting place for a night out, or for a chilled day sipping beers in the covered court yard on a nice summers day.
