Snickleway Inn York - Reviews

Kevin Ireson says: This pub is one of the oldest in York. It has changed it name many times. Most recently from 1896 to 1994 it was known as the Angler's Arms. In 1994 it got a slight facelift, in line with it being a grade 2 listed building. Along with that it got a name change to the Snickleway Inn, which it has stuck with since then.

The layout of the pub has remained the same for as long as I can remember. They have traditional small rooms, still with good appeal. Also noteworthy is that there isn't usually any music that you cant talk over playing. Bar staff friendly, beer is ok, a nice place for a pint in York in my opinion.

There are records telling us they have had a kitchen and served food to the public for at least 100 years. The meals served here now are good traditional pub food. As well as hot meals they also do some good sandwiches.

Lindsay tells us: The oldest parts of this charming, timbered pub on Goodramgate date back to the late 15th and early 16th century. Originally it was a house also reputed to have also been a brothel. It was know to be a pub in 1769 and claims to be the most haunted pub in York.

York Pub Ghosts

The ghost of a small girl has been seen sitting on the stairs of the pub. This is said to be the daughter of a landlord. She ran outside into the road and was killed by the brewer's dray.

The ghost of a woman has also been seen, with her cat walking at her feet. Some customers have claimed that they have felt the cat rubbing against their legs.

Bar Staff have the Worst Ghost to Deal With

An elderly gentleman is said to sit on the barrels in the cellar. He throws tools at certain members of the staff when they go down.

Strange Aromatic Lavender

From time to time the smell of lavender is said to emanate from the top floor, filling the whole pub. During the time of the plague, corpses were placed in the uppermost rooms. To cover the smell, the use of sweet smelling lavender was common.
