The York Arms Pub York North Yorkshire England - Reviews

Kevin Ireson says: This is the best known venue in York which is "Gay Friendly". Management and staff have come and gone but there just is no way you can change this aspect of the pub. I hear you all asking "Why not?" Well, for a population of 200,000 people, there has to be somewhere for gay people to drink. This is and always has been it. From the days when famous thespians from the Theatre Royal used to pop in in the 60's until now.

Location

This is the closest pub to York Minster. As you can see from the pictures, it is literally on the doorstep. It is a Samuel Smiths managed pub. It serves all the well known Sam's pints and little else. The have never really been known for the ale they serve but, it does get drunk.

Food in the Afternoon - Good Pub Grub

Food hear is of reasonable quality. Last time I ate here they had a good Large Yorkshire Pudding filled with Onion Gravy and Sausages on the menu. It was by all accounts a firm house favourite and specialty. There is always a nice selection of traditional pub grub available.

Four star rating imageWiliam tells us: i went to York from Ireland and this bar was grate! staff were very nice!

Five star rating imageCharlie emailed in and says: Since taking over, Barney and Sarah have transformed the place. The atmosphere is still friendly and welcoming and the beer wonderfully priced and good quality, but they have brought a younger vibe to the place that has definitely been a benefit. A Landlady who will deal with trouble with a firm hand and a Landlord who will do anything for his customers - they will be there a long time and they deserve every success!

Four star rating image Ted says: I visit this pub on a regular basis. It welcomes all and the atmosphere is friendly. The pub now has a permanent couple to manage the place Barney and Sarah. These are two of the nicest people you will meet as a management team. On my last visit there was a couple of old timers came into the pub and a bit worse for wear. The management team could easily have turned them away. However, because they are regular visitors and not usually in the state of drunkenness, the management helped rather than hindered. There was no way any taxi service would have taken the elder of the two home. Barney took it upon himself to walk the old guy home which took him an hour" Now who else looks after their customers like that? If in York give the Arms a visit you wont be disappointed. GOOD LUCK TO BARNEY AND SARAH!

Four star rating image Alan says: I live in York and this city centre pub is managed by real nice people. The beers are probably the cheapest you will find in York at under 2 pounds for a pint of Lager in 2010. Yes its true, this pub is Gay friendly and all the locals who use this pub are very warm and friendly. The food is good and very reasonable in price. Give this place a visit if you come to York you wont be disappointed.

Five star rating image Garth tells us: Whenever I am in York for the day I always seem to end up in this pub for my lunchtime pint. Its proper British and that's what its all about. Fantastic clientele, bar staff always friendly and a very nice atmosphere.

Paulo sent us his thoughts: Always gay. The sad thing is that Sam Smiths Brewery have had a succession of 3rd rate temporary, stand in, etc. etc. managers. Result? A fall in standards about which Sam Smiths appear to care not at all. So sad!
