Grange Hotel Brasserie York Brasserie Restaurant

Andrew Bound wrote in to tell us : Situated beneath the Grange Hotel in what was the old cellars is the Granges Brasserie restaurant, easily enough to miss it if not taking to much notice (we chanced upon it just because I had spotted the menu outside).

The restaurant is modest in size but tastefully decorated in a modern style. We were greeted on entry by one of the friendly waitresses and given a table straight away , drinks ordered and menu to hand.

Food

Forgoing starters we (myself and wife Lisa) opted just for a main course each from the main menu though there were 3 or 4 specials offered from the specials menu , I opted for the seared ribeye of beef with garlic and caper butter , served on sauted potato and a red wine jus , while Lisa plumped for the smoked haddock with poached egg , served on a potato dauphinoise and a grain mustard sauce.Chips and vegetables are avaliable as a side order , we ordered one of each.

The steak was cooked to perfection (medium rare as requested) , beautifully moist and succulent helped by the fragrant butter , the potatoes were tender and tasty , both accompanied nicely by the flavoursome sauce. Special mention here must go to the side dishes , the vegetables which were leeks baked in cream were absolutely delicious , packed with flavour and the chips though cut quite thinly were twiced fried to a delicious golden brown , with a crispy bite and lovely flavour. Lisas reported her fish to be beautifully tender and meaty , with a perfectly poached egg , the dauphinoise delicious and creamy , with just the right anount of garlic flavour running through , whilst the sauce was full of mustard flavour yet not too harsh in bite ( I can vouch for this as we returned the next evening and I had the haddock !).

Price

Prices are leaning more towards the pricey side (steak was about 13 , the fish 9 and the sides about 2 each) but for the setting , the efficient staff and not forgetting the wonderful food I would say it is money well spent.
