Cafe No. 8 Gillygate York Customer Reviews

Four star rating imagezina says: What looks like a boring little cafe turns out to serve utterly delicious food. I was actually taken aback by the fantastic flavours of my breaded lamb with rosemary potatoes and veg. It's cramped which gives it a degree of intimacy but really it should expand as it deserves a better layout. Absolutely fab nosh.

Four star rating imageEric Davidson knows the Cafe well and said: I have been eating here once a month for the last 2 years and if anything it is getting better all the time.

Cosy and busy. The food is always excellent. A visit on a Monday evening when most restaurants were empty or only had token diners. This place was full, and turning people away. Yet another excellent meal, somewhat different, slices of Duck on a sweet potato mash, with a salad of beansprouts and Anise and something else I can't remember. They are also flexible and will adjust dishes to suit.

Liz and Dan told us: Based on a well known national newspaper review, we visited Cafe No. 8 on a Friday in 2008.

Food

The food was very nice. Presented beautifully and very tasty, large portions. We had figs and Yorkshire blue and black pudding with apples starter; chicken with pancetta and ricotta, meatballs and tagine, and a dark chocolate pudding. They know how to make cappuccinos too.

Prices

The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is quite chilled out. The service, however was poor and extremely slow. I'd recommend this restaurant but, don't be in a rush when you visit.

Bruce Cruden had a meal here and told us: We made our first visit to No.8 on a Friday lunchtime, it was very busy with a great atmosphere. The service was very attentive and friendly. We were made to feel very welcome. The food was outstanding, the flavours and textures were perfectly balanced. The freshness of the ingredients shone through. Our meals were cooked and presented with great skill and attention to detail. We eat out on a regular basis and the food we ate here was among the best we have ever tasted. This restaurant is a gem and we would highly recommend it to everyone. It serves top class food at very realistic prices and in our opinion is the best food in York.

Rob Barnett told us by email: Me and my wife had lunch and dinner at Cafe No. 8 in July. Absolutely outstanding. A bit small but the food and the selection - also the really cordial relaxed and attentive service - is outstanding. I cannot speak too highly of this restaurant and its friendly atmosphere. Truly imaginative menu without pretension or pretentious prices. You must try the lemon and ginger cheesecake with pistachio ice cream. Sirloin steak also superb. Outstanding meal for two for GBP 39.98. Made the holiday in York memorable. If you go to York then be sure to eat there - you will not be disappointed.

Susan taylor wrote in March 10 2005 to say: We went to this restaurant on a friday evening, the service, ambience & food were all excellent. The menu is interesting without being pretentious and the wine was well priced. All in all a great place to eat, cosy but comfortable. Highly recommended.

Rebecca Wade sent us this little restaurant review on Apr 17 2004. This place is a little gem ... fantastic consistent food that is genuinely interesting and tasty. It's a very cosy dining area maybe a bit small but definitely worth it. The garden is a hidden bonus with views of the city walls and minster. I am always surprised how the place doesn't seem to be packed every night - as it should be! Try the Red Onion, Creme Fraiche and Chili Tart with Goats Cheese.
