Middlethorpe Hall Restaurant in York England - Reviews
Denise tells us: I have sung the praises of Middlethorpe Hall restaurant for 15+ years, my son's 21st party was there. The food is first class, service excellant and the surrounding, although a little jaded in parts, elegant and relaxing. It has been a place where you can put your best frock on and enjoy great food.
That is until late 2008 when I noticed a slight relaxation of the dress code not a problem I thought until Christmas 2009. My partner and I donned our Sunday best and battled our way through a blizzard to start our Christmas Celebrations with a meal at our favorite restaurant. I understood the reasoning behind the relaxed dress code but was horrified when the person sat at the next table was wearing jeans and a grey hoodie with "New York" blazened across her chest. Dress more suitable to a Bistro style restaurant than Middlethorpe Hall. It has not put me off altogether but not going as often finding other places to eat.
Webmaster review: Having heard about great the reputation of this splendid place to eat I was dying for ages to try it. When I did, I knew what my friend Margaret means when she says "It is a divine experience!", as that is exactly what it was. Fresh local produce, is what these folks use to produce masterpieces of unique British cuisine. Seasonal variation of the menus keeps your tasted buds interested no matter how many times you go. Each time I have been the experience is one that I have remembered. A great meal in a fabulous hotel.
Meal in a Splendid Setting
The setting is a magnificent country house hotel. The Oak Room is literally an oasis of calm. With splendid antiques to savour as you anticipate the meal to come. Your delight seems to be their aim.
The choice on the main menu varies. When I was last in the Seared Hand-dived Scallops or Wild Mushroom Soup sounded nice. Having said this there are many others to choose from. They have designed the menu to suit all palates, without exception
Fresh local produce and a chef who knows what to do with them is the order of the day. Seabass, Whitby Cod, Beef, Wild Yorkshire Venison (when in season) are just some of the mouth watering dishes available. Fresh vegetables are carefully chosen as an accompaniment to each of the main courses.
Assiette of Middlethorpe Puddings: this is THE recommended choice of the house. All freshly made these small portions of a number of the puddings are just so tasty! There is also a selection of local and international cheeses for those who do not have a sweet tooth.
The wine menu is varied and quite extensive. Selections come from most of Europe and the New World. There will be experienced staff on hand to help you with your selection. It is what could be considered and eclectic mix of fine wines. There is a bar as well with a good selection of spirits, beers and soft drinks. Aperitifs and or after dinner drinks can be taken by request in the bar.
