The Mogul York The Mogul Tandoori Restaurant York - Reviews

Webmaster review: This might not be the best place to try if you are after a gastronimic experience to remember, but it is open very late.

It was late, very late. 1am after a club and I was hungry. Terrible thoughts of kebabs started running through my head, until I spotted a flashing neon OPEN sign. I entered and to my delight there were 3 staff to greet me in a very pleasant manner and show me to my table.

Food

A look over the menu and there was a mixture of tandoori and other curry dishes. I ordered popadums and a pickle tray, a starter, a chefs special with rice chapattis and 2 side dishes. Do remember I was hungrey and not on a diet at the time.

The pickle tray was nice, but no lime pickle, my only gripe. Saying this the mango chutney was like a sauce which was spiced differently from most others I have had. Also, the popadums were hot, which does make a change to be honest.

Starters

The starter was one that I haven't spotted before. That being tandoori fish samosas. I was asked very politely if I was ready for the starter. They came and although they were made from tinned fish, it was very late and I thought they were great. Just out of the oven and steaming hot, so be careful when you bite into them. I will have to try these again when less inebriated but, they really did sing on the taste buds on the night ... yummy.

Main Course

My main meal arrived with the bombay allo (potatoes) and sag bargi (spinach) I had ordered. I usually order these as standard so I can get an idea what the chef can do. Potatoes were a little over done but tasty. The spinach was nice too. The main course was good and all served with a smile even if it was 1 30am by now, at least.

Drinks

Drink are available late into the night as this is a restaurant. The wine menu seems to have a reasonable mix of red and white form Europe and the New World. The beer is usually cold and goes well with curry. You could in fact call beer and curry a bit of a British tradition in its own right.

Overall it was a good curry, but the thing that puts this place out on its own is that it is open so late. Also the staff are happy to serve you at these late / early hours. York still, even in these days, seems to close at 12 midnight. It made a refreshing change to find somewhere you could go at this time to eat. I have called in for a meal many times since and no doubt I will call again.
